How do you spot tired suspension?

The first clues show up with the bike standing still: a film of oil on a fork tube or on the shock body means a seal is leaking, so damping is on its way out. A stanchion that is scratched, pitted or corroded chews through seals faster and deserves a look too.

The rest you feel on the move:

  • Heavy dive under braking: the front slams down, the bike pitches onto the front wheel and gets hard to place.
  • Repeated bouncing: after a bump the bike wallows two or three times instead of settling straight away, a sign the rebound is holding nothing back.
  • A vague feel in corners: the rear goes woolly, the bike waddles through a series of turns and the line needs constant correcting.
  • Uneven stance: the bike looks slumped on one side or at the back, even standing still, which usually points to a tired spring.
  • Bottoming out: the suspension hits its stops on big hits, with a hard jolt you feel through the whole chassis.

One symptom on its own is enough to justify a proper inspection. The sneaky part is that it all goes downhill slowly: you get used to a bike behaving worse and worse without ever noticing. Preload, compression, rebound: what do these three settings actually do?

These three settings drive the whole way your suspension behaves: preload sets the ride height, compression controls how fast it sinks, rebound controls how fast it comes back. Once you get them, they turn a decent bike into a precise one.

Preload compresses the spring while the bike sits still. It does not make the spring stiffer, it sets how far the bike settles under your weight, what riders call sag. This is the foundation: too little preload and the bike squats, burning through its travel under braking; too much and it turns harsh over small bumps, with less grip in corners.

Compression handles the energy taken in as the suspension sinks: under braking for the forks, under acceleration and over hits for the rear shock. Rebound controls how the spring returns to where it started. That is what keeps the tire on the road after every bump.

How do you set up your suspension without getting it wrong?

The method that works comes down to one rule: one change at a time, tested on the same stretch of road. Move preload, compression and rebound together and you will never know which one did what.

Then work through it in order:

  • Write down your starting settings (clicks or turns from fully closed) so you can put everything back at any point.
  • Set the sag first with preload, wearing your riding gear and sitting on the bike as you normally would. Everything else builds on it.
  • Fine-tune the rebound next, until the bike settles straight after a bump, with no bounce and no stiffness.
  • Finish with compression, going on how it feels under braking and on broken road surfaces.

Match your settings to what you actually do, too. Riding two-up or loaded with luggage? Wind on more rear preload to bring the stance back into balance. Linking up bumpy back roads? Softer compression soaks it up better and tires you less. Smooth road or a track day? A firmer setup brings stability and precision.

What maintenance keeps suspension working over the long run?

Suspension maintenance boils down to three things: watching for leaks, changing the fork oil at the intervals your manufacturer recommends, and dealing with any leak straight away. Fork oil ages, thins out and takes damping quality down with it, even when nothing shows on the outside.

Add the parts that shape the overall feel: the steering head bearings, the wheel bearings and the swingarm linkages. Once they are worn, they bring play and odd reactions that riders wrongly pin on the suspension. And if a shock or a spring needs replacing, always replace in pairs on the same end of the bike: a new part next to a tired one creates a dangerous imbalance.
