Preload compresses the spring at rest. It does not make the spring stiffer, it adjusts how far the bike settles under your weight, what is known as sag. - Note your starting settings (number of clicks or turns from fully closed) so you can go back at any time.
- Set the sag first with preload, in your riding kit and in the riding position. It is the foundation for everything else.
- Then fine-tune the rebound, until the bike settles immediately after a bump, with no bouncing and no stiffness.
- Finish with compression, based on how it feels under braking and on rough roads.
Adapt your settings to your use as well. Riding two-up or loaded with luggage? Increase rear preload to get the stance back in balance. Stringing together bumpy back roads? Softer compression absorbs better and tires you less. Smooth road or a track day? A firmer set-up brings stability and precision.
