Motorcycle tyre pressure: how to keep it in check

There are two complementary ways to keep an eye on your motorcycle tyre pressure: a manual check with a gauge, cold, every two weeks, and real-time connected monitoring with TPMS sensors such as GeoRide's Live Wheel. The reference pressure is always the manufacturer's, listed in the owner's manual or on the swingarm. Properly inflated, your tyres grip better, brake shorter and last longer.

  • Check the pressure cold (bike stationary for 2 hours), with a reliable gauge, every two weeks.
  • The right pressure is the manufacturer's, never the one moulded on the tyre sidewall (that is a maximum, not a recommendation).
  • Adjust the inflation: about 0.2 bar more at the rear when riding two-up or loaded, 0.2 bar more in cold weather.

What is the right pressure for your motorcycle tyres?

The right pressure is the one recommended by your motorcycle's manufacturer: you will find it in the owner's manual or on the sticker fixed to the swingarm, the chain guard or the frame. Those values take into account the weight, the geometry and the original tyres of your machine. There is no universal pressure that works for every motorcycle.

Watch out for a classic trap: the value moulded on the tyre sidewall is not a recommendation. It is the maximum pressure the tyre can take at maximum load. Using it as your target means riding permanently over-inflated.

One last rule, the most important of all: always check cold, meaning when the bike has not been ridden for at least two hours. Heat pushes the pressure up by around 0.2 bar, which skews the reading. And never let air out of a hot tyre: once it has cooled down it would be under-inflated, exactly what you are trying to avoid.

Should you adjust the pressure for load and terrain?

Yes: the manufacturer's reference pressure gets adjusted according to load, weather and terrain. Two-up or with heavy luggage, add around 0.2 bar to the rear tyre. In cold weather, add 0.2 bar to your usual settings as well: air contracts when the temperature drops.

Here are some common ballpark figures, measured cold, by type of motorcycle and use. Your owner's manual remains the only reference that counts for your exact model.

Off-road, pressures drop a long way, to between 0.8 and 1.2 bar, to gain grip on loose surfaces. If you have to get back on the road with those settings, raise the pressure slightly and keep both your speed and the length of the trip down: an under-inflated off-road tyre wears out fast on tarmac.

How do you check the pressure properly with a gauge?

The manual method remains a safe bet, provided you have the right tool and the right technique. First move: invest in your own gauge. The units at petrol stations are often badly calibrated for lack of maintenance. A digital gauge gives precise readings that are easy to read, without costing a fortune.

The check itself takes a minute per wheel:

  • Find the recommended pressures (sticker or manual).
  • Remove the valve cap and hold the gauge square to the valve, so that no air escapes during the reading.
  • Compare the reading with the recommendation: too low, add air with a pump or a portable compressor; too high, press gently on the valve to release some.
  • Put the valve cap back on. It shields the valve from dirt and moisture, the usual causes of slow leaks.

Use every check as a chance to inspect the tread and the sidewalls: uneven wear, cracking, embedded objects. A nail stuck in a tyre can sit there for weeks leaking slowly, and that is exactly the kind of trap a regular visual check catches in time.

How often should you check your tyre pressure?

Every two weeks ideally, and every week if you ride a lot. A tyre in perfect condition naturally loses pressure over time: it is a normal physical process, permeation, air slowly migrating through the rubber.

That is roughly what a tyre loses every month through permeation alone, with no puncture and no faulty valve. A few months without a check, and you are riding noticeably below the recommended pressure.

This is where most riders get caught out: not by the dramatic puncture, but by the slow, invisible drop. The bike becomes a little heavier to turn in, the tyre runs hotter, wears faster on the sidewalls, and fuel consumption climbs. Nothing alarming day to day, but it all adds up in handling and in tyre life.

Why does a TPMS change everything?

A TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) monitors the pressure continuously, including while you ride, where a gauge only gives you a snapshot at a standstill. Sensors measure the pressure and the temperature of each tyre and send the data to a mobile app. At the first sign of trouble, a puncture, a slow leak or an abnormal pressure, you get an immediate alert.

In practice, the difference plays out on the road. A puncture gives no warning: it can happen ten minutes after a perfect manual check. With a TPMS you are alerted while the tyre is deflating, with time to slow down and stop safely instead of discovering the problem at the first hard stop.

There are three families of sensors. External sensors screw onto the valve in place of the cap: two minutes to fit, with no need to remove the wheel. Internal sensors, mounted inside the tyre, are better protected but need a professional to fit them and to change the battery. Finally, some high-end motorcycles come with a factory TPMS built in by the manufacturer.

Another benefit, often underrated: temperature. No standard gauge gives it to you, yet it lets you spot abnormal overheating, valuable information on long summer rides or on the motorway.

Should you check tyre pressure hot or cold?

Always cold: the bike must not have been ridden for at least two hours. Heat raises the pressure by around 0.2 bar and skews the reading. Never let air out of a hot tyre, it would be under-inflated once it has cooled down.

Does a tyre lose pressure even without a puncture?

Yes, a tyre in perfect condition naturally loses pressure, in the region of 0.1 bar a month, purely through air permeating through the rubber. That is why a check every two weeks is recommended, or continuous monitoring with a TPMS.

What signs point to a badly inflated tyre while riding?

The clearest sign is a change in the way the bike behaves: heavier steering and a bike that drops into corners less naturally with an under-inflated tyre, a floaty feel and reduced grip with an over-inflated one. At the slightest doubt, pull over and check, or trust the alert from your TPMS.
