Motorcycle theft: what really happens in 2 minutes 30 seconds
A motorcycle theft takes 2 minutes 30 seconds on average, stopwatch in hand. In 90 to 95% of cases there are no tampered wires and no picked ignition lock: a van pulls up, two or three men lift the bike by hand, and it disappears into the back, disc lock and all. Here is what really happens during those 150 seconds, and what wins you the race against the clock that starts the moment the bike is loaded.

How does a lift-and-load motorcycle theft unfold?
Forget the image of the lone thief fiddling with wires under the dash. According to Mutuelle des Motards (the French motorcyclists' insurer) and geolocation operators, 90 to 95% of motorcycle and scooter thefts are lift-and-load jobs: an unmarked van, a team of two or three, and brute force. The typical sequence, minute by minute:

With nothing anchoring it to a fixed point, the whole operation often takes less than a minute. The 2 minutes 30 seconds average includes the cases where thieves have to cut through a lock. The bike is then stashed in a hideout while they check whether it is connected: a thief never starts it straight away. That window is exactly where a GPS tracker and the police can step in.
How long does a lock really hold out?
Far less time than you usually read. The idea that a U-lock certified to the SRA standard (French insurance certification) "holds out for several minutes against an angle grinder" is everywhere. In reality, that figure comes from the certification test, which is carried out with a hand saw: that is where the advertised "2 minutes" comes from, measured under laboratory conditions. Does that mean a lock is useless? No, but you have to take it for what it is, Thomas points out: anchored to a fixed point, it prevents a silent lift-and-load and forces the thief to pull out a noisy tool that throws sparks, in the middle of the street. That is deterrence and time gained, not an impassable wall. Where are motorcycles actually stolen?
Mostly where people feel safest. Around 50% of thefts happen in spaces perceived as secure: shared garages, residential underground car parks, gated courtyards. A thief prefers to work out of sight, without witnesses and out of the rain, with all the time he needs to load up.
The real scale of the problem goes well beyond the official statistics. The Observatoire GeoRide du Vol de Moto en France 2026 (GeoRide's French motorcycle theft study), our survey of more than 4,600 riders, put a number on what insurers never see: 40.3% of theft incidents are never reported. In 60% of cases because there is no damage to report, in 21% for fear of losing a no-claims bonus, and in 19% because repairs cost less than the excess. The upshot: the 15,975 compensated thefts recorded by GIE Argos (the French insurers' body that tracks stolen vehicles) in 2025 conceal an estimated reality of 55,000 to 60,000 thefts a year, or one two-wheeler every 10 minutes.
The 48-hour race: what happens after the theft
Once the bike is loaded, every hour counts double. A motorcycle stolen at 3 in the morning is often only discovered missing at 8: a five-hour head start for the thief, enough to cross a region or begin stripping it down. And police data is unambiguous: after 48 hours, the odds of recovery drop tenfold. Without a tracking device, only 24 to 28% of stolen motorcycles are recovered in France, often damaged.
