NFC for motorcycles: how contactless keys work

How does an NFC key work on a motorcycle?
NFC (Near Field Communication) works by induction: the reader fitted to the bike generates a small electromagnetic field, and it is that field which powers the fob as you bring it close. The fob therefore has no battery at all. It simply carries a chip with a unique digital code, which the reader checks before allowing the bike to start.
In everyday use: you bring your fob (or your card, or a sticker in your wallet) to around 4 cm from the sensor. The code is recognised in a fraction of a second, an indicator changes colour, and the bike's electrical circuit comes alive. All that is left is to press the starter button. No key to turn, ever.
What makes the system interesting on the security side is precisely that short range. To talk to the reader, the fob has to be a few centimetres away. A thief cannot pick up the signal from the street, nor relay it from your hallway: there is simply nothing to pick up until the fob is right against the sensor. That is a fundamental difference from factory radio keyless, which we come back to below.
What is in a contactless NFC kit?

An NFC kit comes down to three building blocks: the reader, the relay and the keys. The reader replaces the traditional ignition switch. On motogadget's mo.lock NFC, the benchmark on the market, it measures around 32 mm across and is IP69 certified: waterproof and vibration-resistant, exactly what it takes to live on a motorcycle. It can be tucked under a cover or behind a panel to preserve the bike's lines.
The high-current relay does the electrical heavy lifting: the reader alone is not built to take the load of a motorcycle circuit, so it is the relay that closes the circuit once the code has been validated. A wiring loom connects the whole thing to the battery.
On the key side, you can choose the format: keyring fob, card, slim tag or sticker. All are passive and each carries a unique code. NFC, factory keyless, conventional key: what are the differences?
All three systems open the same motorcycle, but not with the same level of exposure. The mechanical key wears out and can be picked, radio keyless transmits constantly and can be relayed, the NFC fob only answers at close contact. The table sums up what separates them.

You will have spotted it in that last row: none of these systems says a word when the bike disappears into a van. We will get to that. But first, a word about that signal amplification attack, because it explains why an NFC kit fitted afterwards can be safer than the keyless system supplied from the factory.
Can factory keyless get your motorcycle stolen?
Yes, and that is the whole paradox of radio-based keyless convenience. The principle of manufacturer keyless is simple: the bike sends a signal, your key answers, the bike unlocks. The problem is that this radio conversation can be stretched out artificially.

Your key is sitting in the hallway, the bike is asleep in the street: the amplifier bridges the gap between the two, and the bike opens as if you were standing next to it. Some models are stolen in 8 seconds flat with this technique. The phenomenon affects cars too, and manufacturers are still looking for the answer.

The NFC fob escapes that scenario by design: it transmits nothing until it is a few centimetres from the reader, so there is no signal to amplify. If your bike has factory radio keyless, a few habits limit the risk: keep the key well away from the front door or in a pouch that blocks the waves, and bear in mind the most widely used theft techniques so as not to make the job easier.
Does NFC protect against lift-and-load theft?
No, and that is the limitation to understand before investing. An NFC system controls starting, nothing else. Yet the vast majority of thieves never start the bike: several of them lift it, break the steering lock, load it into a van and hide it while they check whether it is connected.

Faced with three strong men and a van, your fob is no use: the bike leaves with its NFC, its steering lock and everything else. A theft takes 2 minutes 30 on average, and less than a minute when the bike is not secured to a fixed point. Nearly half of all thefts happen, what is more, in places that feel safe, mainly shared garages and basements.

No, not in real conditions: the fob is passive and only communicates a few centimetres from the reader, so there is no usable signal at a distance. Each key carries a unique digital code checked by the reader. The real weak point of keyless motorcycles is factory radio keyless, whose permanent signal can be amplified from the street.
Does an NFC kit drain the bike's battery?
