How GeoRide protects your personal data: your rides, your rules

GeoRide handles your personal data by one simple rule: it belongs to you. Your rides and your position stay in your account, nothing is shared by default, and any sharing with your loved ones is something you switch on, set up and switch off whenever you want. Does a motorcycle GPS tracker track you?

No. A GPS tracker like GeoRide locates your motorcycle to protect it, not to keep tabs on the rider. What data does GeoRide record, and what for?

GeoRide records what it takes to protect your motorcycle and make your rides richer: position, rides and the state of the bike. Every piece of data has a concrete use, and you'll find it right in the app.

Position first: up to 10 positions per second through a corner, one every 5 seconds on a straight, with accuracy that drops under a meter thanks to Galileo. That rate does two jobs: instant alerts if your motorcycle moves without you, and a faithful trace of your rides. It also feeds the geofence alerts that let you know when the bike leaves a perimeter you've set.

Then the rides themselves: distance, duration, average and top speed, weather, towns you rode through, altitude, and lean angle on the GeoRide 3s. That's the raw material for your replays and your riding stats, which you can pull up in the app and on the web interface.

And finally the state of the motorcycle: odometer, battery voltage, temperature where it's parked. That information feeds the dashboard and your customizable maintenance reminders.

Who can see your position and your rides?

Nobody, as long as you haven't shared anything. Sharing with your loved ones is a feature you switch on deliberately, and GeoRide gives you four modes so you can show exactly what you want to show.

The “only if you fall” mode sums up the thinking nicely: the people close to you see nothing as long as all is well, and hear from GeoRide only if something happens to you. Zone notifications take the place of the “got there safe” text you always forget to send, without ever showing the ride itself. Can recorded speed be used against you?

No. The speed GeoRide measures is a private, personal stat, and it can never be used against you. The device isn't a certified speed-measuring instrument, so its readings carry no weight for handing anyone a ticket.

It's a question that comes up a lot among riders weighing up a GPS tracker: “if my speeds are recorded, can they be held against me?”. The answer is simple: those numbers are there for you, in your ride stats, the same way the weather or the number of corners is. They help you relive your rides and follow your riding, nothing more.

Are the GeoRide 3s Bluetooth signals secure?

Yes. Both Bluetooth features exclusive to the GeoRide 3s were designed with security as a starting constraint. They're good examples of protection built in from the drawing board, exactly what the GDPR encourages for any digital service.

Automatic phone recognition, which disarms the device when your authorized phone comes close, runs on advanced anti-cloning cryptography, inspired by the technology Tesla uses. It works with no internet connection, on iOS and on Android, and it's built so that no other device can pass itself off as your phone.

Radar detection even underground, which guides you to your motorcycle when GPS no longer gets through, only wakes up when the authorized phone is nearby. So there's no way to intercept the signal and locate the bike in your place. A smart jamming detection system rounds out the setup. And if your bike is stolen, you're the one who gives the police permission to use that detection, through Theft assistance, available in France.

What rights does the GDPR give you over your data?

The GDPR gives every European user the right to access, correct, delete and move their personal data, and those rights cover your ride data like any other. A service that processes personal data in Europe also has to tell you what it does with it; in France, for instance, the CNIL is the authority that makes sure those rules are followed.
