What is a smart sensor on a motorcycle?
A smart sensor is an electronic component that monitors one specific parameter of your bike (movement, position, lean angle, temperature, tyre pressure) and passes the information to your smartphone to alert you or enrich your rides. How does a sensor detect a crash?
Crash detection relies on the same movement sensors, but with a different logic: they measure the violence of the impact and the context to tell an accident apart from a simple parking incident. If you crash while riding and the rider does not respond, the emergency services are called automatically in under 2 minutes, and in the right place: the tunnel operations team if you are in a tunnel, the motorway control centre on a motorway, the fire service or ambulance service elsewhere. All of it works independently of the phone, even if it is switched off or destroyed in the fall.
Conversely, a fall in a car park (a side stand giving way, a gust of wind) sends a simple notification to the owner, without calling out the emergency services for nothing. That distinction is the real proof of a sensor's intelligence: detecting is easy; interpreting correctly is what counts. Off-road riders have not been forgotten: an off-road mode stops the frequent spills of enduro or motocross from calling out the emergency services, only genuine serious danger does.
Why does Bluetooth change the game underground?
Because GPS stops at the entrance to an underground car park, Bluetooth takes over where the satellite no longer reaches. That is the physical limit of every GPS tracker on the market: below ground, no more satellite signal.
