How should you read the budget shown?
The table breaks the trip into four items, each worked out from your entries. The fuel line shows the number of litres needed (distance × consumption / 100) multiplied by the price per litre. Tolls and meals are multiplied by the number of days, while accommodation is multiplied by the number of nights, that is one day fewer: on the last evening, you sleep at home.
The total remains an estimate, not a quote. Real consumption varies with pace, load and terrain, and the price of fuel changes from one station to the next. That is why the note under the table recommends a margin of around 10%: on a €500 budget, allow €550 and you will ride with an easy mind.
What ballpark figures should you use if you are starting from scratch?
For consumption, most road bikes sit between 4 and 7 L/100 km: a mid-capacity roadster often runs at around 5 L/100 km, while a big adventure bike loaded up on the motorway can exceed 6 L/100 km. On distance, a comfortable day's stage is between 300 and 500 km on main roads, less if you favour back roads and stops. For accommodation, budget in the region of €15 to €30 a night camping and noticeably more in a hotel, depending on the season and the region. Which mistakes skew the estimate most?
The first mistake is forgetting the return leg: the distance to enter is the full round trip, detours included. The second is using the manufacturer's consumption figure, measured in ideal conditions: at a brisk pace, loaded and sometimes two-up, real consumption climbs noticeably. The third is counting tolls one way only, when they are paid in both directions.
Finally, many riders budget only for the trip itself and overlook wear: over several thousand kilometres, tyres, chain and pads all take a beating, and a service can fall in the middle of the journey. Does the estimate include wear on the bike?
No, the tool covers fuel, tolls, accommodation and meals only. For a long trip, check the condition of the tyres, chain and pads before you leave, and see whether a service falls during the journey. You can fold that reserve into the 10% margin or budget for it separately.
Why does accommodation count one night fewer than the number of days?
Because the last day ends at home: a 5-day trip means only 4 nights to pay for. The tool applies that calculation automatically (days minus one). If you are staying away on the final evening, simply add a day in the relevant field.
How can you fine-tune the fuel item?
Measure your real consumption: fill the tank, ride a hundred kilometres or so in conditions close to the trip, fill up again, divide the litres added by the distance covered then multiply by 100. Enter that figure rather than the default average, and adjust the price per litre to the rates you see along your route.
